Marco Trungellitti opened up about match-fixing, inequality in tennis, and more in an exclusive interview with the Argentine publication La Nacion. He talked about how Novak Djokovic had also been offered to fix matches. Trungelletti also revealed the details of how his life was impacted due to snitching. The Argentine tennis player was approached for match-fixing and was offered $100,000 to fix a match on the ATP Tour. However, remaining true to his integrity, Trungellitti refused the money and instead reported the incident to the Tennis Integrity Unit.
An investigation into the matter revealed that his compatriots Nicolas Kicker, Patricio Heras, and Federico Coria were involved in the crime. This led to these players being banned. The 33-year-old players’ lives turned for the worse after this incident. Instead of being celebrated, he was called a “snitch” and had to leave Buenos Aires.
The tennis star also said that after a few years, it was revealed that Novak Djokovic had also received offers from match-fixers. Other players also came out against match-fixing. Sergiy Stakhovsky, who had joined in on calling Trungellitti a snitch, also revealed that he had been offered to fix a match. All these incidents hurt the Argentine, as he had to unfairly bear the brunt of supporting the truth.
In the interview, he said, “Djokovic said he had been offered match-fixing. Sergiy Stakhovsky, who had called me a snitch, later came out to say that he was also offered. It’s like everything fell into place, but it broke me, basically, because I didn’t expect it,” via LA NACION.
Marco Trungellitti hailes Novak Djokovic for upholding equality
In his interview with La Nacion, Marco Trungellitti revealed that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal did little for the players that were of lower ranks and praised Novak Djokovic for his initiative with the PTPA. He discussed how there is a huge pay gap between those in the upper ranks compared to those in the lower ranks.
The 236th-ranked player said that there are very few opportunities to earn for lower-ranked players, especially those outside the 200. A lot of players are struggling to make a living, and they often have to borrow money to travel to tournaments outside their home country.
The Argentine tennis star said, “I met him [Djokovic] at the US Open and thanked him for what he is doing for the players.”
He praised Djokovic for forming PTPA, an organization that is trying to reduce inequality within the sport of tennis. They have advocated for an increase in the prize money for those who are ranked lower.
