Novak Djokovic defeated Cameron Norrie in an easy 2-setter 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16 of the Italian Open. Though the match score was pretty straightforward, the way the match was played on the court was not very smooth. Cameron Norrie made the mistake of hitting a ball at Djokovic’s torso when he was not looking and had given up on the point being played. Now, the Brit did apologize, but that was not enough for the Serbian.

In the post-match conference, Novak Djokovic talked about all the little annoyances he faced from Norrie. He talked about how Norrie took a medical time-out right before Djokovic was going to serve for the match. Djokovic also spoke about how, right from the start, Cameron Norrie kept shouting ‘Come On’ right to the Serbian’s face. Djokovic said that all this is not flouting any rules, but that’s not how opponents behave on the court.

He added that made it a bit difficult to understand. “I don’t understand that kind of attitude on the court”, adds the 22 Grand Slam title winner.

The whole episode concluded with Novak Djokovic giving a very cold handshake to Norrie at the end of the match. Djokovic who is a graceful winner and loser usually gives warm shake hands and hugs at the end of matches. But he was sure to show his contempt for Norrie’s behavior when they came to the net. Netizens approved of Djokovic’s response.

This was only the third time the 2 players played each other and the first time in 2023. All three times the Serb has got the better of the Briton. This was their first clay court meeting and it was a breezy win for the world no. 1. The world no. 13 who turned pro all of 14 years after Djokovic, 2017 vs. 2003 has a lot to gain from playing on-court with these stalwarts.

One of the most important matches the two players played was the semi-final of Wimbledon 2022. It was the first time that Norrie reached the semi-finals of the tournament. Norrie got off to a great start by taking the first set from Djokovic. But world No. 1 was quick to bounce back and won the match in three sets. That match also got a lot of media attention when Djokovic got booed by the posh British crowd.

Furthermore, he blew a kiss to the spectators after he won the match, and the crowd didn’t take it in good spirits. Perhaps Norrie’s behavior in the Italian Open was a culmination of that kiss from Djokovic.
