Former tennis player Mats Wilander has put his faith in Novak Djokovic at the upcoming Wimbledon, rating him as the clear “big favorite”. He believes that Djokovic will be under a lot of pressure in the competition, as there are a lot of records that he might break if he manages to lift the trophy at the end.

With Rafael Nadal dropping out due to his injuries, Novak will be happy that he will face a bit less competition and that he will have to control his nerves to complete yet another feat that is in contention.

Novak has won 23 Grand Slam titles throughout his career but has not been able to bag all four Grand Slams in a calendar year. He has already won the first two Grand Slam titles of this year (the Australian Open and the French Open) and has set his sights on completing the calendar Grand Slam for the first time in his entire career.

In a recent interview with Eurosport, Wilander said, If he wins, he’s now one Slam away from doing the calendar Grand Slam again. And if he wins, you would think that he’s put himself far enough away in the distance from Rafael Nadal to come after him and actually threaten his record.”

Furthermore, Wilander briefly talked about the weight of immense expectations on Djokovic at the moment and how the Serb separates himself from tennis greats Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Continuing his train of thought, he further added, “I would think that he’s learned a tremendous amount from losing in that final at the US Open against Daniil Medvedev when literally history was on the line and winning the calendar Grand Slam. Of course, it has been done before, but Novak would separate himself from the other big two, Roger and Rafa.”

Will Novak be able to match Margaret Court’s record?

Margaret Court, who holds the record for the most Grand Slam singles titles for any male or female player, is an absolute legend of the sport. And Novak Djokovic, who stands at 23 Grand Slam titles after his recent Roland Garros win, is extremely close to breaking the record. The record stood for so long that nobody expected anyone to even come close to touching it.

Lastly, it was Serena Williams who was expected to equal the record after she beat her sister, Venus Williams, at the 2017 US Open to register her 23rd Grand Slam title. However, the now 41-year-old couldn’t do the unthinkable in later years. Now, after all these years, Novak Djokovic has the chance in his own hands, and the Serbian doesn’t want to miss this golden opportunity.
