Sunday afternoon in Paris and all eyes were on the Phillipe Chatrier for the men’s singles final. The 2023 French Open after a fantastic fortnight has come to its final day with only two warriors standing. World no. 3 Novak Djokovic went head-on against World no. 4 Casper Ruud. The Serb was targeting a record 23 Grand Slam and on the other side, the Norwegian was aiming for his first.

Ruud was looking in an inspired mood as the match started. Breaking the opening Djokovic serve and going 4-2 up. However Djokovic quickly broke back and pushed the first set into a tiebreak. An exhausting first 12 games meant Ruud didn’t have much left in the tank. Djokovic quickly took advantage of that as he wrapped up the tie breaker 6 points to 1.

The second set saw a rather tired Norwegian as he couldn’t hold serve and gave Djokovic the early break. The Serb went on to take the set 6-3 without sweating much. Ruud did step up in the 3rd set. The set was tied at 5 games all. However, that’s where Djokovic brought his best tennis and broke Ruud’s serve. Served it out eventually to win the match in straight sets. 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 was the final score to end a fantastic 2023 French Open.

A fantastic fortnight for the Serb as he shows high-class quality despite getting a tough draw. With this massive win, he overtakes his biggest rival Rafael Nadal in terms of winning the most number of Grand Slams. This year at the Aussie Open he equaled Nadal’s record of 22 Slams. And by winning in Paris he becomes the first male player to win 23 Grand Slams. He has also equaled Serena Williams by winning this trophy.

By winning the 2023 French Open, Djokovic broke yet another record in the Open Era. He now is the only male player to win all four Grand Slams at least three or more times. A feat the Serb will be extremely proud of. Many careers haven’t seen the opportunity to win a single Slam. To win 23 of them and each thrice is a great deal. He will now become the no. 1 player in the world.

His 388th week as the best player in the world. This is the second French Open title in the last 3 years. Also for the first time, Djokovic won the final in Paris in straight sets. It took him 4 sets to overcome Andy Murray in 2016. And took 5 sets in his famous comeback win against Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2021. He will take great confidence from this win and would love to go to London in an inspired mood to win Wimbledon for the 8th time.
