Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev, who defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open final, has joked about the Serbian’s retirement plans. Medvedev has claimed that Djokovic is still “super young” and won’t retire before he turns 45. As players gear up for their opening match at the 2023 US Open, Medvedev looked in a jovial mood and made these comments about Djokovic.

The Serbian, at the age of 36, is still the top favorite to lift the title at the Flushing Meadows. Despite the fact that Djokovic is returning to New York after two years and that he last won the Grand Slam in 2019, the 23-time Grand Slam winner is a title favorite considering his form this year. Novak Djokovic has won two of the three Grand Slam events this year.

The 36-year-old also won the Cincinnati Masters title, defeating the World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz in the build-up to the year’s last Grand Slam and now Djokovic is expected to lift the title at the Flushing Meadows as well. The murmurs about the Serbian giving his younger opponents a run for their money is not stopping and, in the same light, Medvedev was asked this question in the press conference.

To which the Russian gave a funny response. “Him being back is great. I always said I want him to play every tournament, especially even if at the moment he seems super young, there’s going to be one moment, we don’t know when, 45 or 40 years old, he’s going to stop. I think that’s the reality. I don’t think he’s going to go more than 45 years old or something,” said Medvedev.

The Russian tennis ace has been drawn in the second quarter of the US Open main draw while Novak Djokovic is in the fourth quarter. Daniil Medvedev is expected to face Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinal. In the semifinals, Medvedev can face either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner. If all goes well for the Russian, he stands a chance to meet Novak Djokovic directly in the final.

If it happens, it will be a rematch of the 2021 US Open final where Medvedev emerged victorious. Moreover, the two players have faced each other enough to know their opponent’s game plan. Medvedev and Djokovic have played each other 14 times wherein the Serbian leads the record 9-5. Ever since that defeat at the 2021 US Open, Djokovic has won 4 out of five times against Medvedev.
