Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev in the finals of the US Open 2023 to claim the title for the fourth time and extend his total Grand Slam title count to a record-breaking 24. The Serb took his revenge for the 2021 US Open Finals, where Medvedev prevailed in straight sets.
Speaking to the press after the match, Novak Djokovic’s coach and ex-player, Goran Ivanisevic, said that the loss at Wimbledon might be the only setback for the year for Novak, and they have moved past it since. When asked about his winning mentality in the second set of the finals, Goran said, That’s right, but he was also a little lucky – because Daniil “gifted” him the first set. That break in the second game was a pure gift.”
Goran Ivanisevic further added that, despite the breaks, one must always be careful of Daniil Medvedev. Talking about Novak’s game in the second set, Goran said, Novak really miraculously won it. I thought he didn’t look good; he had a few luckily earned points, some fantastic volleys at the net, and then he read Medvedev at the net very well to set a point for him.”
Goran also stressed the importance of the second-set tiebreak that was played between the 2. He mentioned how Djokovic regained his energy during the tiebreak and eventually won it to seal the second set. He added,” Had he lost the tiebreak today, the next match would have been completely different, perhaps with a different outcome. But when he managed to conquer it, it was only a matter of time before the final victory came.”
Novak surpasses Serena in the Grand Slam race and equals Margaret Court

Novak Djokovic equaled Margaret Court‘s record of 24 Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, overtaking American legend Serena Williams by one more. He now has the highest number of Grand Slam titles ever. A lot of other records were broken on Sunday night when Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev in the finals of the US Open.
He is only going on to prove that age is just a number for him. 24 Grand Slam titles at 36 years of age is a remarkable feat, and this is still not the end of the Serb. He will be looking for more. He is still hungry and passionate, which is all he requires to give him that one extra push to continuously stay at the top.
