“Novak Djokovic’s expulsion was an example of medical tyranny,” Former UN Secretary sheds light on the Australian Open debacle
Ramesh Thakur and Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic had a tough time in his professional career, something he had not thought of in his wildest dreams. He was deported from the country owing to his ‘unvaccinated status’ and was debarred from playing at the Australian Open for the next three years. This hit him mentally and emotionally and this was reflected in his performance at the French Open. But he bounced back to shut down all the trollers and haters by becoming the Wimbledon 2022 champion.
But his ordeal does not stop here. His participation at the US Open is still uncertain as his status is still ‘unvaccinated’ and he has no intention to get vaccinated anytime soon. But the US Government has made it clear that they will not be allowing unvaccinated participants into the country although the US Open officials have no issues regarding it. It has created a lot of debate around the world as when the Serbian was allowed last year, then why not this year and it is a sign of hypocrisy that vaccination status should not decide the fate of players.
“Hopes Americans do not repeat the Australian fiasco” Ramesh Thakur on Novak Djokovic’s participation at the US Open
Novak Djokovic is on the list of players at the Cincinnati Open although his chances at the US Open are minimal. He will be allowed to play only if he gets vaccinated or there is some sort of exemption for him which is unlikely to happen.
With all the controversies going strong, former UN Secretary Ramesh Thakur joins the debate in sharing views on the Australian Open debacle and how the action displayed by the Australian Government was totally ruthless. He was found saying “Djokovic’s expulsion was petty, vindictive, and an example of medical tyranny. It undermined the identity of Australians as free spirits.”
He is hopeful that the US Government learns from it and does not repeat such unjustified and unruly behavior towards the 21-time Grand Slam champion and rather be shown respect and be allowed to play. He further spoke that “I would love to see the Americans reject a repeat of the Australian fiasco at the US Open, but I’m not holding my breath. The ability of authorities and governments to stubbornly, even cheekily ignore facts, data, and evidence throughout the pandemic has been impressive.“
