“It’s causing unnecessary polarity,” Novak Djokovic’s fans come down hard on Pam Shriver for suggesting new metric to compare Steffi Graf’s record with the Serb

"He must really bother you," Pam Shriver's 'creative' idea is turned down by Djokovic fans

“It’s causing unnecessary polarity,” Novak Djokovic’s fans come down hard on Pam Shriver for suggesting new metric to compare Steffi Graf’s record with the Serb

Novak Djokovic recently regained his No.1 position for the first time since June 2022. By dethroning Carlos Alcaraz and clinching his 10th Australian Open title, Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer‘s 310 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings. The Serb has also broken Steffi Graf‘s best-ever record of 377 weeks.

However, as usual, the record was questioned by many. Pam Shriver has suggested the usage of a “new” metric to ensure that Djokovic has, in fact, surpassed Graf’s record-total weeks. Djokovic fans disagreed with the idea and even provided sufficient data to disprove the former tennis player. Shriver’s suggestion was not taken lightly.

Shriver recommended a more technical approach to calculate the actual number of weeks spent by both players. The American backed up her suggestion to use percentages by claiming that careers are now ‘longer’. Shriver’s dig at Djokovic was not taken lightly by the Serb’s devoted fans. They staunchly disapproved of Shriver’s dig at Djokovic.

Shriver said that calculating the total percentages would be more efficient. With a comparison between the total weeks ranked and the total weeks at No.1, Shriver sought to prove Graf’s superiority. However, fans were quick to point out the fault with her theory and even attacked the ESPN commentator for her baseless suggestion.

On the other hand, some fans thought the suggestion was credible. Regardless, the comment created an uproar on Twitter. A comparison on such a basis is extremely harmful to both men and women in the sport. Moreover, comparing two different players from different eras was not conducive to the argument posed by Shriver, according to fans.
