Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev had another interesting clash during the semis of the 2023 Adelaide International. But as their head-to-head suggests, it was another win for the 21-time Grand Slam title winner. Djokovic won the match 6-3, 6-4 to reach the finals without dropping a single set.

Medvedev now trails Djokovic 4-9 in the head-to-head having lost all of their last four meetings. The Russian’s last win against the Serb came in the finals of the 2021 US Open. It was a poor outing for Medvedev today as despite some good shots, he could not win the tie. With Djokovic injuring himself mid-match and even taking a medical timeout, Medvedev couldn’t capitalize on it.

During the match, however, Medvedev brought out the funny side in him. Grabbing his left leg, he looked as if he was mocking Djokovic’s injury and possibly calling it fake. While there’s not enough evidence to conclude whether the Russian was really mocking his Serbian counterpart, for Djokovic fans, it felt like disrespect.

The former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev is often called a character for his antics on the court. In defeat and victory, he never fails to entertain fans. But many spectators and fans felt that he went over the line while taking a dig at Novak Djokovic‘s injury. While there has been inconsistency in Djokovic’s injury timeouts over the years, this one did look like a genuine concern.

Many fans of the nine-time Australian Open winner took to Twitter to express their anger over the actions of the Russian. While some just spoke about their anger, many others took to trolling the 2021 US Open winner as he failed to win the match yet again.

Djokovic will however be unbothered. The two had a good handshake on the net and doesn’t seem like the Serb held any grudges. Defeating Medvedev, the top seed is into the finals where he will take on youngster Sebastian Korda. Korda defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in the other semi-final. Korda had won the first set but the match ended due to Nishioka handing a walkover due to a mid-match injury.
