The 22-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is again being stopped from participating in the Indian Wells Open. This is the second time in a row when he will not be playing in the ATP 1000 tournaments in the USA. The US authorities have declined his application for exemption from double vaccination against Covid-19 mandate.
This has also become a controversial issue since the Serbian was allowed to play in the Australian Open 2023 despite not changing his stance on vaccination. The world saw him win his career’s tenth Australian Open title.
Eminent sports journalist Christopher Clarey shared comments from the US Travel Association regarding the vaccination mandate.
Novak Djokovic withdrew his name from the entry list into Indian Wells Open as the news of US authorities’ refusal to grant him a waiver came in. Also, it is expected that he may also lose a chance to play in the Miami Open.

Novak Djokovic got support from American players

The US authorities may have refused to provide support for the Serbian, regarding his vaccination stance and in granting waiver for the double vaccination mandate, his contemporaries and retired professionals are raising their voice in support of the 22-time Grand Slam champion.
Both Mardy Fish and John Isner have criticized the US government’s decision. Mr. Fish has apologized to Novak Djokovic in his latest social media post for such as unfortunate situation.
“WHAT A JOKE. Sorry @DjokerNole,” his caption read.
John Isner on the other hand shared comments of Dr. Eli David.
“Breaking: Djokovic denied entry to the US, because he’s not vaccinated, even though he’s already had Covid. 0% science. 100% cult,” Mr. David had written in his caption.
To this Mr. Isner also shared his own opinions.
“Don’t worry guys, on May 11th he will be deemed safe enough to enter the USA. Until then, he’s far too dangerous. Do not question the science, our government has been spot on with all things Covid since the onset,” his caption read.
Since the Serbian is not playing in the Indian Wells Open 2023, the organizers will have to try hard to keep the competition attractive for all tennis fans. However, the person who will be losing most will be Novak Djokovic himself. He had a golden opportunity to further his lead in ranking points, if he would have played in this tournament. Hence, now even his current World No.1 ranking is also under threat.
