Mutua Madrid Open posted distressing news on behalf of Novak Djokovic. The World no. 1 has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open due to his wrist injury. The tournament is going to be at a huge loss to the 3 times Champion. Novak Djokovic has won the Mutua Madrid Open 3 times. In the years 2011, 2016, and 2019. With his 2019 he matched the record of Roger Federer who has won 3 Madrid Opens. The record no. of titles has however been won by Rafael Nadal. Rafael Nadal has won it 5 times. Unfortunately, Nadal is also going to be missing in action in the Madrid Open due to his ankle injury.

Novak Djokovic has been suffering from a wrist injury since the Monte Carlo Masters. He wore a black arm bandage to assist his wrist during the match he lost to Lorenzo Musetti. Rumors were ripe that he was going to miss the upcoming tournaments but he decided to play at the Srpska Open at Banja Luka. In the Quarterfinals, however, he lost to his fellow countryman Dusan Lajovic. In the post-match conference, he said his arm is still injured. Before the Banja Luka Open, Djokovic mentioned he was not very confident about his arm but he hoped it would be enough to win.

Tennis fans are anxious about the fact that both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are going to miss out on the Mutua Madrid Open. They feel tennis is going to suffer with them missing and the young generation will have to step in to fill the gap.

This is not the first time Djokovic is withdrawing from major tournaments due to injury. He has had a string of injuries in the past which has forced the Serb to withdraw from seasons earlier. But every time, Djokovic has emerged stronger than before. A look into his comeback journeys.

2016 Injury and comeback: first half of the 2016 season was unbelievably great as he won the Australian and French Open, Indian Wells, and Miami, Madrid. Then the Serbian player dropped physically and he dealt with elbow and arm issues. He could not play at the Rio Olympics as he arrived there with wrist injuries. He struggled with form rest of 2016 though, at the end of the year, he reached the US Open Finals where he lost to Stan Wawrinka. The entire 2017 Djokovic had a very inconsistent performance with the injury flaring incessantly.

2018 Surgery and Upturn: He underwent elbow surgery in January 2018 and returned to court at Indian Wells. He faced challenges in the first part of the year but had a great grass season winning his 4th Wimbledon title. Later in the year, he lifted the US Open trophy. He returned to the no. 1 position.

Seeing his great comeback after injuries one can say he is the king of comebacks. This time around though he is not as young as before but people hope he will be back for Roland Garros along with his rival Rafael Nadal. People want to see more of the red clay rivalry which peaked in 2020 and 2021.
