Novak Djokovic was handed his first defeat at Centre Court in over a decade as he was defeated by young gun Carlos Alcaraz in the finals of Wimbledon. The Serbian went down fighting in five sets as he was denied an opportunity to claim his 24th Grand Slam title. French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou believes that Novak Djokovic crumbled under pressure against the Spaniard in the finals.
The former coach of Serena Williams believes that both players are on par going into the 2023 US Open. Despite his recent victory, Patrick Mouratglou believes that Carlos Alcaraz does not have an edge over Novak Djokovic at Flushing Meadows. In fact, he backs the former World No. 1 to step up his game at the final Grand Slam of the year.
“I don’t think Carlos has an edge on Novak. I think both players are very close in terms of level. I think Novak can play much better than he did in the Wimbledon final. I think he was very nervous,” said Mouratoglou.
“Will he (Alcaraz) prevent Novak from winning any (more) Grand Slams? I don’t think so. Will he take some and Novak takes some? I think so,” He further continued.

Patrick Mouratoglou backs Novak Djokovic to step up at 2023 US Open
Novak Djokovic has claimed three US Open titles so far and will be looking to add a fourth to his tally next month. Last year, he missed the tournament owing to COVID-19 vaccination protocols. However, interestingly, Patrick Mouratglou has backed the Serbian to match Carlos Alcaraz’s level at the last Major of the year.
It is believed that Carlos Alcaraz could be the new face of men’s tennis, considering his dominance on the Tour this season. After his victory over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, fans predicted the Spaniard would end the Big Three’s reign once and for all. However, the French tennis coach believes otherwise and states that Novak Djokovic still has a couple of Grand Slams remaining in him.
For context, Novak Djokovic has returned to action at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters as he begins his preparations for the US Open. On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz struggled at the Canadian Open last week and will look to make amends in Cincinnati.
