Novak Djokovic, the former World No.1 had to withdraw from the 2022 US Open after failing to comply with the US mandate and guidelines to enter the country. He had faced setbacks since the start of the year over his unvaccinated status. His firm stance on not getting the vaccine resulted in his absence from two out of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the year.

He had waited till the last moment till the final draw of the US Open was out in the hope of some changes that might allow him to play but to no avail. He tweeted his announcement saying “Sadly, I will not be able to travel to New York this time for US Open. Thank you NoleFam for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! See you soon tennis world!

It all started with his deportation from Australia even after entering the country on a valid visa. He had been given a medical exemption at first, which later snowballed into a controversy. After legal wrangling, Djokovic’s visa was cancelled and he was deported. The Australian immigration rules are clear. Once a person is deported, her or she cannot re-enter Australia for three years. However, that rule may be changed by the new political dispensation in charge of the Australia. Decks are being cleared so that he can compete in January 2023 in Melbourne.

At the French Open, Djokovic had lost to Rafael Nadal.

The only positive thing that happened with Djokovic was being able to win his 7th Wimbledon title. It was his aggregate 21st singles Grand Slam title where he defeated Nick Kyrgios after a rough start to 2022. He continued with his winning streak at the All England Club as he remains undefeated for the past four years.

Djokovic’s uncle Goran Djokovic, during an interview, pointed out that the saving grace of the ban is that the Serbian ace may continue to play for a few more years. He will not be burnt out and fully prepared to play his best level in whichever tournament he gets to play.

Goran said that “The ordeal he went through this year in Australia only extended his career. Instead of maybe retiring from tennis in three or four years, his career has been extended for five, or six years. He is resting his body.
