A controversial situation arose at the Estoril Open quarter-final match between Nuno Borges and Cristian Garin on Friday. With their place in the last four at stake, both players had a very important match ahead of them.
Garin got off to a flying start, sealing the first-set win, and pushing the game into a second set. However, the Portuguese started to make a comeback, taking the game deeper. In one of those points in the second set, the game was halted due to an inconvenience on this field.
The umpire did not react much to the situation and blindly handed the point to Garin. In an important match, a point was stolen from Borges, which turned out to be costly in the end. Along with the umpire, even the Chilean player faced much criticism for his unsportsmanship-like attitude.
After the match, Borges had taken to the press to spill more insights on this matter. He also blamed the umpire for not paying closer attention to the match, which was halted for a small bit. Although Borges doesn’t entirely blame his opponent, he indirectly said that his opponent could have done better in that moment.
I left the court without understanding the umpire’s judgment. He knows he made a mistake. It didn’t make any sense. Point shouldn’t stop because someone in the crowd shouts. He felt something coming from the crowd but we continued, but he missed. Garin told me he missed because I stopped. It’s not his fault, but he doesn’t look good in this situation as well…said Nuno Borges after the quarter-final loss.
Nuno Borges failed to make it to the semi-finals in front of his home crowd
Unlucky Nuno Borges had a truly bad day during his matchup with Cristian Garin. With nothing going his way at the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open, the Portuguese failed to make his home crowd proud.
En route to a perfect finish, Borges was up till the quarter-finals, where he failed to make it through to the last four with final result showcasing 2-6, 6(3)-7(7) against the Portuguese ace. Nonetheless, it was still a valiant effort by the Portuguese, as his opponent made it to the next round. Cristian Garin is through to the semi-finals of the Estoril Open and will face Hubert Hurkacz on Saturday.
The Chilean did play some great tennis in the match. Although he was bashed for not being a good sportsman on social media, he still managed to get past Borges and enter the semi-finals.
