Seed No. 1, Rafael Nadal, speaks about how it feels to be a father in the post-match interview of the first round of the Australian Open. Earlier today, Rafa won his first-round match against Jack Draper. In the post-match interview, he opened up about being a dad and said it was one of the most beautiful things.ย 

Rafa began his title defense with a hard-fought 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jack. The match went on for about three and a half hours and had some beautiful rallies throughout.

When reminded of him being a dad, the Spaniard said, Yeah!! it’s true.” And he went on to say, “Well, as for everybody knows, it is one of the most beautiful things in life without a doubt. So enjoying this new moment, having fans super happy and grateful to have them with me here in Australia, that helps a lot. So I’m happy to able to play tennis in this stage of my career after being home months. I’m very grateful.”

Rafael Nadal talks about his first round and upcoming challenges

The top seed, Rafael Nadal, had no easy first round. The match had everything a fan expected. Rafa lost a set 2-6 in which Jack broke his serve twice consecutively. There was a rain interruption for the match, and not to forget, Rafa lost one of his racquets. However, Rafa said in the post-match press conference that he was happy about this win, no matter how he won it. He also said that he needed this win after a few defeats earlier this year in the United Cup.ย 

He also said he was not impressed with Jack’s performance as he felt he has the potential to do a lot better. Jack had a cramp during the 4th set of the match and hence lost his rhythm towards the end. The 36-year-old wished him a speedy recovery and said he was happy to win against a great player. Speaking about whether his baby is an extra motivation, he said “No. I have been always enough excited to play every single tournament. My approach to the competition is not changing much being dad or not.”

The world No.2 plays the American, Mackenzie Mcdonald in the next round on Wednesday. Mackenzie had a tough outing in the first round having to play a five-setter. Overall, it will another exciting context for the defending champion.
