One year later, Venus Williams set to return to singles action as she is granted the wildcard for the Canadian Open

Former World No. 1 Venus Williams will be back on the tennis courts during the upcoming 2022 Canadian Open in Toronto as the 7-time Grand Slam champion will make a comeback after a year-long absence. Currently unranked in the WTA singles rankings, Venus’s brilliant track record so far sees her get the wildcard for the tournament in Canada which is scheduled between the 8th and the 14th of August.

Venus will join her sister Serena Williams at the tournament as both the sisters are fit once again to compete at the highest level. Venus last played at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships in the Mixed Doubles but could not go quite far as she lost in the second round partnering Jamie Murray in the Grand Slam. Serena on the other hand played in the singles at Wimbledon but lost in the first round itself in a closely contested match.

Venus made her debut at the Canadian Open in 2009 reaching the second round. She suffered a first-round exit in her next appearance in 2013 but then made a good run in 2014 finishing as the runner-up to Agnieszka Radwanska. In her next 5 appearances since then, she is yet to reach the 4th round again with her last appearance coming in 2019 when she lost in the first round to Carla Suarez Navarro. She is 10-8 at the tournament from her 8 appearances.

“I’m so excited to be back playing the National Bank Open. I love the city, the tournament, and I look forward to being back in Toronto,” said Venus as per Eurosport. Similar to Serena, Venus’ return to singles action is a good sign for the fans to hope that the 2-time US Open champion makes an appearance at the 2022 US Open as well where she will look for her 8th singles Grand Slam title.
