Women’s sports have evolved over the years. While they are yet to reach the same levels of financial success as men’s sports, their popularity has been witnessing a surge year over year. However, the primary issue is that not all women’s sports have grown at the same rate. The WNBA and soccer teams have witnessed more consistency in terms of growth, whereas that is not the case in terms of tennis.
Prominent names such as Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, Maria Sharapova, and others helped take women’s tennis to greater levels of popularity. Fans flocked to see them play and rise through the ranks of the sport. However, women’s tennis may have hit a bump in the road when it comes to growth. The French Open 2023, which is going on from the 22nd of May to the 11th of June, is a testament to this.
Spectators who purchased tickets for the tournament have been reselling the tickets for the women’s matches in large numbers. This fact does not sit well with Ons Jabeur, the highest-ranked Arab female player in tennis history. She came back from behind and won her matchup against Serbia’s Olga Danilovic. Jabeur won the game with a 4-6, 6-4, and 6-2 score.

Ons Jabeur wants tennis fans to have an open-mind while watching female matchups

Ons Jabeur will now take on Bernarda Pera in the fourth round of the French Open. The Tunisian-born tennis phenom shared her thoughts on the problem of spectators reselling their tickets for female matchups. Ons Jabeur is of the opinion that fans are just stereotyping that the matches will not be as good and the level of play will not be on par with that of the games in which men are featured.
However, at the same time, these fans do not know what the level of play is or that the competitiveness is equal to, if not greater than, the games of their male counterparts because they have not watched them. Ons believes that if fans were to give the matches between women an actual shot, then they would actually enjoy them.
“It is time to change that vision…I find that people don’t watch many female matches, and they just judge that it’s gonna be a crappy match. But it’s not the case. There are a lot of extraordinary matches. Women are training, making a lot of efforts, playing extraordinary matches. I met many people who say, ‘Well, the female matches, blah, blah, blah,’ and I ask them, Did you watch a female match? They said no. How can you judge a female match without watching it?”
The tennis star hopes that fans will give the sport a shot and, only after watching it with an open mind, give a verdict on it. The other reason that women’s matchups are not as hyped this year could be because, after the retirement of some of the biggest names in the sport, fans are yet to familiarize themselves with the newer players who are making their mark on the sport.
Ons Jabeur has her eyes set on winning the French Open 2023 and in her press conference following her win against Olga stated that this is what she’s dreamed of. “I’m gonna give it 100 percent. We learn from the other fourth rounds that I lost here. Obviously have much more experience than the other times. Let the dream continue. Roland Garros is very close to my heart, and a Grand Slam that I always dreamed of winning with the big girls.”
Will this be the year Ons goes all the way and wins the French Open? Only one way to find out!
