Tunisian player Ons Jabeur expressed her emotional reaction to a supportive message from former player Andy Roddick. Following her heartbreaking Wimbledon finals defeat, Jabeur got a comforting note from Roddick that moved her to tears.
Jabeur, fighting back delighted emotions, expressed her appreciation for Roddick’s kind gift. She revealed that the letter was lengthy and touched on her journey as well as her future chances. The tennis pro intends to meet Roddick in person at the upcoming US Open.
“I was crying, happy crying. I appreciate that he took the time to write a good long message. I’m definitely talking to him when I see him probably at the US Open,” she said.
Roddick, a three-time Wimbledon finalist against the famous Roger Federer, could understand Jabeur’s feelings. In an essay, he explained why he reached out to the emerging star, highlighting his conviction in her potential. He said, “I have more faith in you winning Wimbledon than I ever had in myself winning Wimbledon.” The letter exhorted Jabeur to prioritize preparation, fitness, and confidence.
Jabeur acknowledged her surprise and excitement at getting a note from her idol, emphasizing the importance of such encouragement to her morale. She has been overwhelmed by the good response she has received from the sporting community, but Roddick’s letter stuck out and struck a deep chord with her.
Ons Jabeur faces emotional struggle as she returns
Following her recent loss to Marketa Vondrousova in the Wimbledon final, Ons Jabeur has spoken out about her continuous struggle with disappointment. During her maiden Media Day at the Western & Southern Open, Jabeur laid her emotions on her sleeve, candidly describing the difficulties she has faced in the aftermath of her defeat.
Jabeur, seeded fifth in the Cincinnati draw, said that the loss had a major impact on her, saying, “I had to take a few days, a lot of days off, to recover, and it still wasn’t enough.” The sting of the loss, which occurred four weeks ago, has proven to be a difficult hurdle for the tennis star to overcome.
“I wasn’t feeling ready to play Montreal because that loss was kind of tough for me. So I tried to stay home, be with my family,” Jabeur shared, highlighting her efforts to seek solace and support in familiar surroundings. “I tried to reflect a little bit on the final,” she admitted, “but for now, I’ve got to be honest, it’s still tough to think about it again.”
As Jabeur prepares to return to competitive tennis, she is banking on the healing power of her court routines. She drew inspiration from her own experiences, recalling how a similar setback last year, when she lost her first major final at Wimbledon to Elena Rybakina, motivated her drive to recover, eventually leading to the US Open final.
