Ons Jabeur is one of the few African players on the tour, but certainly, she is the most successful and popular among them. She also has a big fan following in her home country Tunisia, where people flock to watch her play.
The Tunisian made her country and people very proud last year when she reached the final of two Majors back-to-back. She played in the finals of the Wimbledon and the US Open. Although she lost both the finals, her performances helped her to finish the year as World No.2. She became the only African player to secure such a high ranking, whether male or female.
Ons Jabeur is now riding on the same popularity. She loves it. In a recent interview, she tells how things have changed for her and how she is overwhelmed with the fans’ support and affection for her.
“It’s really amazing, you know. The part that changed a lot is, even going to have a coffee or something, people come and support me,” the current World No.5 said. She also compares her with F1 legend Michael Schumacher in an interesting way. “Driving, people are shouting – Ons. I feel like Schumacher. Driving, you know,” she continued.
Tunisia is a football-crazy country, but slowly, thanks to Ons Jabeur and her recent successes, Tunisian people are also interested in watching tennis. “It’s really amazing and what’s crazy in Tunisia is, they watch soccer – it’s the national sport in Europe, in Tunisia, and now people watch more tennis than that! Which is crazy!” said the 2022 Madrid Open champion. You can see in the cafes. They probably don’t know what the score is, but they are still watching. You know, to encourage me and that means a lot to me,” she added further.

Ons Jabeur shares a story of her fan who offered to cook for her
The Tunisian is one of the most widely followed sports stars in the world. After a difficult start to the season, Ons Jabeur is finally seeing some success. She made it to the final of the Charleston Open. This is special for her as she could only make it to the semi-final round of this competition in the past two seasons.
This time, however, she defeated Daria Kasatkina in the semi-finals 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the final match of the competition. But when she beat Anna Kalinskaya in the quarter-final round of the tournament, she had, in an interview, reminisced a beautiful story of how a ball boy wanted to cook for her. It happened last year, but it gave Ons Jabeur some special moments to cherish.
”When I asked for dinner last time you know everybody offered to cook for me which is really amazing so thank you guys, even one of the ball boys told me he is taking cooking classes and willing to cook for me,” she had said.
