Tunisian tennis ace Ons Jabeur is not so pleased with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for registering a complaint against her just for voicing her peaceful opinion on the Israel-Palestine war. Jabeur says she was aware of the Israeli Tennis Federation moving to ITA and WTA against her but was surprised to discover that ITF registered the complaint.
Jabeur then said that her message was just about peace and that she wanted this war to end. The Tunisian ace said that whatever she said was what she believed in and never found it wrong in any sense. Jabeur also claimed that she stayed within the rules before posting the message on her social media accounts.
They filed the complaint to the WTA and I’m aware of it, they told me about it. But I didn’t say anything wrong. I just shared my opinion and I stayed within the rules. I actually was surprised they complained about it. I don’t even know why. My message was really peaceful.Ons Jabeur via The National
What had Ons Jabeur said about the Israel-Palestine war that landed her in trouble?
Ons Jabeur has strongly condemned the attacks on Palestine from Israel after geopolitical tensions escalated between the two neighboring countries. After Hamas- the militant group in Palestine attacked Israeli forces and its citizens, the latter retaliated resulting in a large number of casualties. Distressing visuals from both countries made the rounds on social media and this prompted several celebrities, including Jabeur, to condemn the war.
Like others, Jabeur also picked a side (Palestine) as she asked people supporting Israel to read a bit about the history between the two countries. Jabeur also demanded a free Palestine.
What Palestinians have been going through during the last 75 years is indescribable. What innocent civilians are going through is indescribable; no matter what their religion is, or what their origin is. Violence will never bring peace. I cannot stand with violence but I also cannot stand with people having their lands taken. Peace is what everyone needs and deserves. Stop the violence and #FreePalestine.Ons Jabeur wrote in her social media post condemning the war.
This clearly did not sit well with the Israeli Tennis Federation, who then approached the ITF and WTA with its complaint about Jabeur. While the ITF registered the complaint, the world tennis governing body is yet to take any action against the Tunisian. Nevertheless, Jabeur is now focused on the WTA Finals and eyes to end the season on a high.
