Something is clearly wrong with Ons Jabeur. The Tunisian was the runner-up at the 2023 Wimbledon and she was in fine form at that Grand Slam. However, since losing to Marketa Vondrousa in the final, there has been a significant dip in her form and her poor performance in the Abu Dhabi Open recently was yet another example that proved the same.
The World No. 6 has lost to Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil in the second round of the 2024 Abu Dhabi Open. The Tunisian was outperformed by her opponent from the very beginning of the match and it started to become frustrating for her by the end. As a result, Ons Jabeur could not hold her feelings within her and burst out crying during the second set when it became clear that she was going to lose the match. She eventually did lose the match 6-3, 6-4.
She had performed well in the first round, as she defeated Emma Raducanu 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets. However, she has not performed well in her last few tournaments as well. Jabeur lost to youngster Mirra Andreeva 6-0, 6-2 in the second round of the Australian Open as well, which was an extremely unexpected outcome. Before that, she was also unable to make it to the knockout stage of the WTA Finals.
Ons Jabeur set to participate in the Doha Open next
Jabeur will take part in all three tournaments of the Middle East swing this season, having lost the opportunity to do so last year due to surgery for her knee injury which she had picked up in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open. Now that she has been eliminated from the 2023 Abu Dhabi Open, Ons Jabeur will shift her focus to the Doha Open.
The Tunisian is the fourth seed in the Doha Open this year, after Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina. However, looking at the form she is currently in, she will have to make massive improvements before being able to compete for a title with the other elite players.
Jabeur has a decent record in the Doha Open. She reached the quarterfinals of the event in 2022. In 2021, she lost to Karolina Pliskova in the second round.
