The World No.7, Ons Jabeur, is someone who is known to take up a stand and voice out her opinion on matters of concern. The Tunisian expressed her desire to spread peace in the world amidst the ongoing horrific Israel and Palestine War, after her win over Marketa Vondrousova in Mexico.
Talking about how the WTA Finals and tennis are of almost no significance due to more pressing concerns regarding the Israel and Palestine war, Ons Jabeur conveyed a heartfelt message in an interview post her match and called for peace in the world. She stated,
Honestly, a tennis match doesn’t mean anything in front of what’s happening right now… I try to stay off social media as much as I can. But it’s very tough. I wish peace in this world. I wish we can restore the humanity.
The much-awaited WTA Finals is taking place in Mexico. However, this tournament is getting overshadowed by grave violence and killing in the Israel-Palestine war. Ever since Israel began its air strike on Gaza, Hamas has retaliated and the entire war has resulted in the death of around 10 thousand citizens, which include women, children, and men.
Talking about the ill-effects of this war, Ons Jabeur added,
The situation in the world doesn’t help. I’ve been affected a lot by seeing babies & women & people dying every day. It’s very sad.
The 3 time Grand Slam finalist looked emotional as she tried to express her sadness with regards to the war. She also mentions how she has deeply been affected by what is happening around her and how seeing videos of people dying is very disturbing sight for her. Ons Jabeur also added,
You go through videos & horrible, horrible photos every day.. The worst thing is that I feel hopeless.
Ons Jabeur has pledged to donate some money to the Israel-Palestine cause
The 2023 Wimbledon finalist, in a kind gesture, pledged to donate some money to the grief-stricken countries. Jabeur talked about how she hoped that she could solve the issue with magic and help restore world peace immediately. Talking about her helplessness, she stated, ”
I feel like I cannot do anything. I wish I can have a magic hand & just end all this & just bring peace for everyone. It’s frustrating.
The Tunisian also added that money will not solve everything but she hopes to see the issues resolved in the near future. She further said,
But I know money doesn’t mean anything right now to them. I wish freedom for everybody & peace for everyone.
On the sports side of things, Jabeur will be facing Iga Swiatek on Friday. Jabeur’s 6-4, 6-3 victory over Vondrousova has kept her in the hunt for the semi-finals in Cancun.
