World No. 6 Ons Jabeur lost her chance to wrap up a Wimbledon title yet again this time, after her defeat to Elena Rybakina last year at the same stage. She was the favorite in line for lifting the title ahead of the match, but she failed herself yet again despite defeating all the potential winners of this year- Petra Kvitova, Rybakina, and Aryna Sabalenka on her way to the match.
She lost the game 6-4, 6-4 and when asked about what went wrong for her and what put Marketa Vondrousova close to her title, she said, “I think Marketa just put the ball in, slices a lot. I believe that it was completely different match from the last three that I had. So maybe adapting to her rhythm was very difficult for me. Plus the pressure and the stress of the final.”
Jabeur also talked about how she completely forgot about the Wimbledon rules while practicing ahead of her final. Jabeur wore a black kit during her practice session at the Centre Court, an incident she clarified later on saying, “No, I completely forgot the white rules. When you go into a match court, you just dress up as normal clothes. For me, I completely forget that today I was warming up on Centre Court, it has to be all white. Yeah, I don’t know, it was just an honest mistake.”
How Jabeur was impressed with Marketa with her performance in the final?

Ons was not impressed with her performance at all, giving up silly points and not being able to challenge her opponent at all. She later shared during the post-match conference on how nicely Marketa capitalized on her mistakes and how her calm and composure nature got her the Wimbledon title. She said, “I didn’t think she made a lot of mistakes. I thought she served good. I think she played maybe a perfect final for herself.”
With this loss, Jabeur is going to have a hard time coming back as even she agreed that this year, she had a great chance of completing the job which she left undone the previous year. She was up against a player who was out for a long time with several injuries and not much game time leading up to this tournament. Taking nothing away from Marketa, who recovered herself brilliantly just in time and not to forget the story about how she was here at the same place last year but as a guest in the stands.
