Following an abysmal display, Ons Jabeur suffered a disappointing 6-0, 6-2 loss against 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the Australian Open.
The 29-year-old Tunisian star was the only hope for an Arab and African woman to win a Grand Slam title, but that lay in tatters now with the bitter loss.
It took just 55 minutes for youngster Mirra Andreeva to get the business done, revealing how flat and unprepared Ons Jabeur looked on the court.
As expected, many tennis lovers reacted to the shocking performance on social media, saying that they did not believe that she was in the game.
Last season, at the same Rod Laver Arena, Jabeur lost in the second round to 24-year-old Marketa Vondrousova. Begging the question of why she has not passed the second round of the Australian Open in a year.
Tennis journalist, Jose Margado reacted to one of Jabeur’s poor returns in the first set on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Jabeur’s trademark is that she’s usually a step ahead of her opponent, but today she’s been about five steps behind Andreeva in every rally. The Tennis podcast wrote.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
For Mirra Andreeva, the victory over Ons Jabeur is her first against a top-10 player. And Ons Jabeur is her idol, who has reached three Grand Slam finals and remains one of the most famous and richest tennis players in the modern era.
All over for Ons Jabeur in the 2024 Australian Open
Ons Jabeur suffered a heavy blow to her ambition to become the first Arab and African woman to win a major title after losing to a Russian teenager 6-0, 6-2.
The sixth seed Jabeur began the match on the wrong side and quickly found herself on the wrong foot as her 16-year-old opponent capitalized on her horrible errors. After just 20 minutes, the Russian was up 6-0 in the first set, while THE 29-year-old conceded eight points.
This was Mirra Andreeva’s fourth Grand Slam main draw appearance after she made her debut at the 2023 French Open. In the second set, Ons Jabeur made it a little difficult for Mirra, but the teenager, already confident, showed maturity beyond her years as she dealt with everything that the 29-year-old threw at her.
After the loss, Jabeur still had a smile on her face for a more determined look expected of her, which fans have dubbed the Tunisian’s ‘Minister of Happiness’. She would hope for a better performance at the French Open.
