World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka has had one of the best years of her career so far racking up semi-final appearances in all the four Grand Slam tournaments. Despite being able to convert only one Slam win at the Australian Open, the Belarusian finished off the 2023 season with two more titles to her name. Former American tennis player Pam Shriver has given her views on the future of the Belarusian athlete.
The 61-year-old feels that despite not getting a lot of titles in 2023, Sabalenka has a lot to prove next year and rates her ahead of Iga Swiatek. Shriver also talked about the tough training that Sabalenka endures herself with and also rated her to go on to win three Grand Slam titles next year.
Having missed on the opportunity to win enough Slams this year with woeful losses in the semi-final and final rounds, the American holds Sabalenka as the favorite for Wimbledon and the two other hard-court Slam tournaments.
She seems to be built for the endurance part of this … she’s strong and she trains well. Her team has been through a lot with her and I feel there’s a lot of stability there. I think she has a pretty good chance at three of the four majors -- the only one I wouldn’t say is Iga’s best one, Roland Garros. But I think she can win Wimbledon and the two hard courts. I’d say it’s a very good chance she wins at least one."Shriver Via WTA
How did Swiatek and Sabalenka align themselves this year?
The top two players at the helm of women’s tennis had a great year by their means. Both of them were closely matched in terms of consistency with both Swiatek and Sabalenka racking up titles left and right whenever possible. While they faced each other three times this season, Sabalenka won once while Swiatek won on the other two occasions.
While Sabalenka won the Adelaide International 1, Australian Open, and the Madrid Open this season, Swiatek had a more decorated season with wins at the Qatar Open, the Stuttgart Open, the French Open, the Poland Open, the China Open, and the recently played WTA Finals.
While Sabalenka was successful in knocking out Swiatek off the World No. 1 spot in the WTA rankings, Swiatek reoccupied her spot back last month and the Belarusian will have her eyes on the glorified spot yet again next year.
