“No guarantees,” Pam Shriver warns Coco Gauff of not winning a Grand Slam title

Pam Shriver has high hopes from teenage sensation Coco Gauff who reached the fourth round of the ongoing Indian Wells Open. However, she has also raised this possibility that the current World No.6 may not be able to win a Grand Slam title ever in her career.

Coco Gauff has made some giant strides in her career in last two seasons. She came very close last summer to win her career’s maiden Grand Slam title. She went down fighting in the final of the French Open last year against Iga Swiatek in singles discipline. The 19-year old also reached the final of the doubles discipline of the same tournament with Jessica Pegula but lost to all-French pair of Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic.

The doubles specialist Pam Shriver fears that her prophecy may become true as she herself went through the same phenomena in her career. She defeated Martina Navratilova in the semi-final of the US Open at a very young age of 16 years. In the final, however, Chris Evert defeated her. She could never reach the singles final of any Grand Slam event in her career.

“I know how it is to burst onto the scene, the expectations it creates. There are simply no guarantees of anything – nothing,” she said in an interview with sports broadcaster EuroSport talking about chances of Coco Gauff winning a major.

Pam Shriver praise Coco Gauff’s family

The seven-time Australian Open doubles champion is very impressed with Coco Gauff’s family. She thinks that the values her parents gave her and the close knit group they are has helped the current World No.6 prosper on the tennis circuit.

“I think she has a good balance of everything else with her family off the court. She likes to have fun with everything she does off the court. But I think she’s definitely really close with her family, which I think keeps her very grounded and with her siblings and stuff like that,” she continued.

You know, then she’s kind of the star on the court. So it’s cool to see how she’s balanced it a lot at such a young age. I would say probably credit to her parents for helping her with that. She’s just a fun personality, and she’s got such a long, long career ahead of her. Just to see what she’s done at such a young age is pretty crazy,” she added further.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula’s campaign in the Indian Wells Open doubles ended in the fourth round after the all-American pair lost to Japanese-Indonesian pair of Miy Kato-Aldila Sutjiadi. However, she will take on Rebecca Peterson in her fourth round singles fixture of the Indian Wells Open 2023.
