World No.9 Alexander Zverev will be looking forward to confirming his spot in the ATP Finals as he fights for his 6th career Masters title at the Paris Masters. The German will be facing French pro Ugo Humbert in the second round of the tournament on Wednesday. The Tokyo Olympic gold medal winner is currently 7th in the race to qualify for the year-end championship to be played in Turin, Italy.

On the other hand, the home crowd favorite Ugo Humbert will be determined to spoil Zverev’s party as he arrives into the clash in fine form and would be buoyed by a partisan French crowd. At the Shanghai Masters, earlier this month, he reached the quarterfinals of a Master for only the second time in his career, defeating fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round. Currently ranked World No. 26, the Frenchman is just one spot away from his career-high ranking, achieved in 2021.

While Zverev has already won 2 titles this year, Humbert hasn’t managed to reach a tour-level final for 2 years now. The pair have faced off only once, at the Halle Open in 2021. Humbert defeated the German in 3 sets on course to his 3rd career ATP title.

Alexander Zverev vs Ugo Humbert : Match Preview

Alexander Zverev avoided a scare in the first round of the Paris Masters as he got the better of Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics in 3 sets earlier today. The 10th seed defeated the Hungarian 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in just over 2 hours and 30 minutes to book his spot in the second round of the tournament. Zverev said in the post-match interview:

It was a very difficult match and I am happy to be through. I found my level and I am happy with that.

The German no.1 has been in decent form this year and won his 21st ATP title at the ATP 250 Chengdu Open last month. Since a semi-final appearance at the China Open, the 26-year-old has struggled to find his best form. The German pro would hope that he could put his personal issues to the side and not let them affect his game. For context, he has been charged 450,000 euros by the Berlin district court for physically injuring his ex-girlfriend & mother of his child.

On the other hand, Humbert began his campaign in a dominating fashion as he breezed past American qualifier and Japan Open semi-finalist Marcos Giron in the first round. The French southpaw defeated Giron 6-4, 6-3 to extend his run in Paris. The Frenchman arrives into the tournament on the back of a strong semi-final finish at last week’s Swiss Indoors. The 25-year-old has reached at least the quarter-final stage of the last 3 tournaments he played.

Alexander Zverev vs Ugo Humbert: Match Prediction

The match-up against a left-hander might prove to be a tough challenge for Zverev as his strong backhand comes up against Humbert’s forehand. Nevertheless, the German is expected to dominate the groundstrokes and wouldn’t give many opportunities on his serve.
