The main draw action of the final Masters event of the calendar, the Paris Masters, begins on Monday, October 30. The headline clash of the first round will witness 3-time Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka up against 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem. This will be the first clash between the pair since their quarter-final encounter at the 2017 Indian Wells Masters.
Wawrinka arrives into the clash on the back of a first-round exit in his home tournament, Swiss Indoors. Thiem suffered a similar fate as he was knocked out of the Vienna Open in the first round. While both the players have struggled to find their best form, the 38-year-old Swiss has had a relatively better 2023 season.

Stanislas Wawrinka vs Dominic Thiem: Match Preview
Leading up to Monday’s clash, Wawrinka suffered a disappointing first-round defeat against the Russian Qualifier Alexander Shevchenko at the Swiss indoors, in Basel. The World No.83 got one of the biggest wins of his career as he defeated the Swiss 6-3, 7-6(8). With the loss, the 38-year-old has now lost six of his last eight matches and has put his recent dip in form down to tiredness. Wawrinka remarked:
I feel that for the past few weeks, I have been very tired. After Astana, there were two or three times when I wanted to work, but I couldn’t because I was too tired.

To his credit, as the Swiss explained, he began the year ranked outside the top 100, but after reaching his first ATP final since 2019, at the ATP 250 Croatian Open in Umag, he has climbed back inside the top 50. Currently ranked World No.45, Wawrinka has a year win-loss record of 26-21.
But in a bit of sad news for the Swiss, he will have to encounter another set of different balls at the Paris Masters. The 38-year-old had earlier complained about the issue, saying that the ATP should use the same set of balls in different competitions.
On the other hand, Thiem arrived at the tournament on the back of a first-round exit in his home tournament, the ATP 500 Vienna Open, at the hands of 5th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek prevailed 7-6(5), 6-4, to hand the Austrian his 22nd defeat of the year. At the Paris Masters, the World No.99 has come through 2 qualifying rounds to book his spot in the main draw. In the first qualifier, Thiem got the better of Lorenzo Sonego in 3 sets.
Stanislas Wawrinka vs Dominic Thiem: Match Prediction
Wawrinka will back himself in the clash of 2 elegant one-handed backhand players. The Swiss has been brilliant on his serve while Thiem has struggled to find his first serve. There isn’t much to decide between the pair on the backhand side but Wawrinka will find success on Thiem’s forehand side.
