The 2023 Paris Masters is taking an unexpected turn at every point. The tournament has already experienced two major upsets, those of Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev, very early in the event. The 24-time Grand Slam title champion, Novak Djokovic, is also making his comeback to the ATP Tour at the Paris Masters.

However, a big blunder was made by the authorities and the match officials before the matchup between Novak Djokovic and Tomás Martín Etcheverry. While introducing the players on the court, the announcers, by mistake, welcomed the Serbian on the court, stating that he was the 7-time champion and the defending champion at the Paris Masters.

For the uninitiated, the 2023 US Open Champion has won the Paris Masters six times, and Holger Rune is the defending champion at the tournament.

While this false claim was ignored by a lot, few were quick enough to raise eyebrows and suspicion over the match officials’ words, who very confidently gave the wrong introduction for Novak Djokovic.

With that being said, such mistakes shed light on the issue of whether the announcers have their notes fact-checked before the broadcast begins. The facts and speeches must be thoroughly checked before they speak live on air, as people watch these matches worldwide.

Novak Djokovic’s actual record at the Paris Masters

The seven-time Wimbledon champion actually has an extremely impressive record at the Paris Masters. Novak Djokovic has won the title an impressive six times in his career: in 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019, and 2021. The Serbian reached the finals in 2018 and 2022 as well. Out of the 56 matches that he has played there, he has lost only nine times and has actually dominated the Paris Masters over the years.

Contrary to what the match officials stated while introducing the Serb, Holger Rune defeated Novak Djokovic in the finals of the Paris Masters last year and is the true defending champion of this tournament in the current year.
