Patrick Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams, believes that every sport needs to have superstars that attract the crowd to watch the sport. In tennis, it has always been iconic players like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal that have attracted crowds in large numbers.
With fans playing an important role in sports, Mouratoglou believes that with the constant evolution of the sport, more and more players emerge, attracting crowds to the sport. The excitement has always been there in the sport, and the former coach of Serena Williams believes that with Djokovic on top and other players challenging him, the sense of excitement is still strong, keeping the fans on their toes.
The ideal situation at the moment, I think we have it because Novak is still at the top. Rafa, we'll see, but on clay, for sure, he will be the guy to beat. And you have young players coming up, who are very dangerous. There is this tension that I think that every sport needs.Mouratoglou via Instagram
Mouratoglou recalled the time when Serena Williams was playing. The American had attracted huge crowds to fill up the stadium and create a healthy atmosphere. With Williams on the court, the fans were excited every match, cheering on the players and giving the sport a healthy recognition.
I remember when Serena was playing. The excitement around it, of course, is the same now with Novak and with Rafa, who unfortunately couldn't play.
Patrick Mouratoglou reasons why superstars are required to elevate the sport and bring in a lot of success
The former coach of Serena Williams had earlier stated that the younger generation of players, along with some legends, are keeping the fans excited in tennis, which is very important for the sport.
I think it's exciting to have both superstars and also young players coming up, it's not great if the champions always win. There has to be some suspense and uncertainty.Mouratoglou added
Williams, Djokovic, and Nadal have captivated the audience in tennis for over two decades, winning 23, 24, and 22 titles, respectively. While the American has always been active off the court, even the other two have simultaneously been working on something or the other outside the court. Through the role of a brand ambassador, these players search for ways to attract as many fans as possible, making the sport popular.
However, with Williams retired, other youngsters are in place, trying to get more people invested in the sport. While only Djokovic and Nadal remain from the big three, the youngsters are making large strides in the sport by posing a challenge for the top players.
