World No. 73 Paula Badosa has withdrawn from the 2024 Indian Wells Open in a shocking turn of events. The Spaniard did not have a great start to the season and her troubles have continued.

She featured alongside her boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Eisenhower Cup’s Tie Break Tens. The couple defeated the all-Polish pair of Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz in the first round. They followed it with another win over the team of Frances Tiafoe and Qinwen Zheng.

‘Tsitsidosa’ eventually lost in the title decider to Ben Shelton and Emma Navvaro in a close battle. With things looking good for Badosa, her withdrawal from Indian Wells has come as a big shock for all fans. Having won the title back in 2021 defeating two-time winner Victoria Azarenka in the finals, she was a crowd favorite at the event.

But the former World No. 2 has now suffered another injury setback. Playing in this year’s edition via a wildcard, she had to make a last-minute withdrawal. As a result, she is replaced in the draw by Argentine Nadia Podoroska.

The 26-year-old took to her Instagram stories to inform of her decision explaining the reason. She, however, wished that she would quickly make a turnaround and return to the Tour. She posted a long message along with her photo from back in 2021 when she won the title.

So sorry I have to withdraw from my favorite tournament. I tried everything to be able to play but wasn’t enough. I’m having a very difficult time with my injury but I’m fighting every day to comeback as soon as possible. I wanna thank the fans that are sticking with me, specially this past year.

I’m sorry I haven’t given what you are expecting from me and I’m just giving you sad news lately. (Trust me it’s the last thing I want also). I also want to thank the tournament for the WC, you are the best tournament in the world. See you next year. Hopefully soon the tears will be tears of joy again.
Concluded the Spaniard.

Although she might have hoped to get some match practice in preparation for Indian Wells, the decision seems to have backfired. Nevertheless, it does not warrant any negative comment against her for protecting her body instead of playing through injury.

As she was widely trolled, she took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to post a classy response to the trolls. She also thanked her fans for showing sympathy and wishing for a quick comeback from her.

One day I’ll be smiling on a court again Thanks for the nice messages. And for the negativity also, you make me stronger. See you soon I promise.
Tweeted Badosa.

With the 2024 Miami Open still nearly two weeks away, fans would hope the Spaniard can make a return. With a season record of 4-5 so far and ranking on the decline, Badosa needs some good runs to return to the top rankings.
