Jessica Pegula had a tremendous season where she aced new heights and was one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour. She made it to the second week of all Grand Slams where she lost to the eventual champion in 3 of those. But the end of the season wasn’t ideal for her as she lost all her group matches to crash out of the group stage of the WTA Finals.
Pegula is the daughter of billionaire Buffalo Bills Owner, Terrence Pegula. Naturally, she had a very good upbringing and money was never an issue for her to get into tennis. She talked about the same and revealed how much hard work she has put in for being able to stand where she is today.
“There are so many stories of people coming up and having to earn their way. I think I know, and other people know, in the tennis world that, of course, you can’t be successful without working really hard and putting in the work and the hours,” Pegula told Eurosport.
She also accepted that many people might think that she got spoonfed her way into the tennis circuit but put light on the fact that even if you can afford the best coach in the world, that doesn’t mean that it’s going to work without hard work.
“But I think also to that kind of extent there’s so many people that don’t know about tennis that are kind of like, ‘Oh, she probably had everything given to her, she probably had the best coaches and the best stuff’. I definitely know from personal experience, just because you can afford so-called the best coach in the world, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to work,” she said.
Jessica Pegula believes people don’t want to root for her because of her family’s money
Pegula further said maybe the money her family has is the reason why she doesn’t get much support from the fans. She feels that people don’t want to root for her because they believe that she has had a fairytale Cinderella-like story.
“I think that is a misconception, not just in tennis, but maybe sports, that it doesn’t matter who it is, sometimes it’s the fit, or the personality fit, the way you handle your career as tennis it’s just so different. So I think sometimes I definitely get the feeling that people don’t want to root for me because it’s not more of like the fairytale, Cinderella story, which is fine, and I’m okay with that,” Pegula added.
