Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova criticized Wimbledon’s scheduling, citing the fact that some players, like top-seeds Iga Swiatek and Daria Kasatkina, have already advanced to the third round, while others have not yet completed their first-round matches, even on the third day of the Championships.

For context, rain has been disrupting play since the very first day and has wreaked havoc with the scheduling of matches. Persistent delays due to rainfall resulted in Czech Petra Kvitova’s first-round match against Italian Jasmine Paolini continuing on Wednesday.

Petra Kvitova’s first-round match was originally scheduled to be played on Court 3, but with the second day of play also affected by inclement weather, her match against Paolini was moved to Centre Court. Although the ninth seed came through, the Czech was less than pleased with the scheduling of matches.

“We talked about it in the locker room, we don’t get it. Daria Kasatkina and Iga Swiatek are in the third round, and some haven’t even finished the first round yet,” Petra Kvitova said.

Kvitova expressed her dissatisfaction with the Wimbledon scheduling during her post-match press conference. She said that there have been conversations about the issue in the locker rooms and that some players are finding it rather perplexing that players like Iga Swiatek and Daria Kasatkina have already advanced to the third round while others have not yet played their first match.

The world No. 9, who won the Berlin Open last week, believes that players who have not yet completed their first matches should be given priority on Centre Court. She said that she understands that delays are common at Wimbledon due to the vagaries of the weather conditions, but she also went on to say that it does not make them any less frustrating.

“They should put Round 1 players on Centre Court. It’s depressing to wait for two days to play. It can happen at Wimbledon, but it’s annoying,” said the Czech.

With 72 career wins and counting on grass, Petra Kvitova leads the players remaining in the tournament. The naturally gifted southpaw, with powerful groundstrokes, is playing on her undoubtedly favorite surface.

Kvitova will look to carry forward the momentum of her recent triumph on the lawns of the Berlin Open and go into the deeper stages of the tournament. The crafty Czech, who has overcome many odds to emerge as a successful athlete, will surely be a dark horse to watch out for in the days ahead at the Championships.

Kvitova, the two-time Wimbledon champion (2011 and 2014), will face Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her second-round match. The ninth-seeded Kvitova leads the head-to-head 2-1.
