Doubles World No. 92 Peyton Stearns had an anti-climatic end to her doubles campaign at the ongoing 2024 Miami Open. The 22-year-old had picked up an injury during her second-round singles defeat.
She was up against three-time former champ Victoria Azarenka who beat her 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Despite a good performance from the young American, she wasn’t able to overpower the 27th seed. Stearns is now 3-8 for the season. She had earlier won her first round clash against Yafan Wang defeating her 6-2, 6-3.

Along with this defeat, she also picked up an injury in her shoulder. Stearns opted for a treatment to make herself available for her doubles campaign. She had partnered with compatriot Madison Keys in hopes of winning the title. But the dream was cut short as the shoulder injury forced her out of action.
She took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to let her fans know of her decision. She did, however, promise to return to the event next year. This was her second appearance at the event and her first in the main draw as she lost in the qualifiers last year.
Unfortunately had to withdraw from doubles. During my singles match my shoulder started hurting and with a few days of treatment afterwards I’m still not able to play. Really was looking forwards to getting out there and competing, see you next year MiamiStearns wrote on X
Following the timely withdrawal of Stearns, the tournament organizers were able to replace them in the draw. The alternate pair of Russian Anna Blinkova and Brazilian Ingrid Martins were roped in as replacement. They won their first-round match and are now in the second round.
Danielle Collins names Peyton Stearns as her ‘successor’ for a peculiar on-court habit
Playing her farewell season, World No. 53 Danielle Collins has moved into the fourth round of the Miami Open. After Bernarda Pera took a set off her in the first round, Collins has clinically won her next two ties in straight sets.

Following her third-round win over Elina Avanesyan, Collins was asked a rather unusual question during her on-court interview. The former World No. 7 was asked who she feels is her ‘heir apparent’ for her famous ‘come on’ on the WTA side. Collins was quick to name Stearns as her replacement.
I feel like Peyton Stearns. Peyton Stearns is my little buddy and watching her compete and do the whole 'come on' out there cause she played in Texas, it's so much fun watching her. So, she'll carry the torch.Said Collins
While the Miami campaign for Stearns is now over, she can still cheer on for Collins. The 30-year-old will now take on 19th-seeded Sorana Cirstea for a place in the quarter-finals. The American leads the head-to-head 1-0 against the Romanian.
