“Poetic justice!” Tennis Twitter takes a jibe at Wimbledon after Russian-born Elena Rybakina becomes champion amidst the unjust ban on Russian athletes
Elena Rybakina with her 2022 Wimbledon trophy
Elena Rybakina writes history by becoming the first-ever Kazakh to win a grand slam title after she defeated third seed Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon Final in three sets 3-6,6-2,6-2. Rybakina, who at the start of the tournament didn’t expect to make it to the second week, played some clutch tennis to win a very tight match.
Interestingly, Rybakina is a Russian-born athlete and Wimbledon banned Russian players to compete this year so as to take a stand against the Russian atrocities on Ukraine. But as Rybakina had already taken Kazakh citizenship, she was eligible to play this year.
Rybakina was multiple times questioned about the same in press conferences during this fortnight but every time she has made it clear that she has no connections with Russian now after she changed her nationality. But interestingly, she still lives in Russia and pays taxes in the country.
It can, at last, be deemed that she is a Russian who changed nationality after her own country didn’t give her better opportunities. But despite everything, this situation has put Wimbledon in a very weird position as their newest champion- in a year where they banned Russians, is partly Russian.

People on social media have called this out and are joking about Wimbledon making a mockery of themselves as many disagreed with the ban when it was instated in the first place.
