Daniil Medvedev is looking a bit anxious as he stares directly at the Clay season, his least favorite of all tennis seasons. Recently, in an interview, he happened to joke with the press, “Am I going to play on clay? Are you sure there is a clay court season?” The player is known for his sharp-witted replies but is equally famous for his on-court angry outbursts.
His nervousness for the upcoming clay season is palpable as he prepares for his first season tournament, Monte Carlo Masters. “Even if my confidence is at its peak, maybe I’ll play horribly in Monte Carlo… I’ll just give it my all and see how it goes.”, the World no. 4 told the press. “So the first tournament is going to be tough. I’m already preparing myself mentally not to lose my mind if I play really bad in Monte-Carlo.” he further added.
Attempting to be a bit more optimistic than he is currently about the season ahead. He added “I can be dangerous on clay but I have to be well in my head. ” Recalling his successful run at the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters where he reached the semi-finals Medvedev said, “I beat Novak (Djokovic) once on clay. I actually beat (Stefanos) Tsitsipas and Novak at the same tournament once, wow. That’s pretty good achievement on clay.“
We have seen Medvedev can turn around a match in Hardcourt but in clay, he finds that a bit challenging. After being crowned the Champion at the Miami Open 2023 he said, “Here in Miami, honestly, I didn’t feel at my best. But I got away with it. But, on clay, if the match starts badly, often I can’t make it work.”

A peek at Daniil Medvedev’s Clay court successes

2019 was one of the best years for Daniil Medvedev on clay. As mentioned above he knocked out Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas on the way to reaching the semi-final of the Monte Carlo Masters. He lost to Dusan Lajovic in the semifinals. Then he went on to reach the finals of the Barcelona Open where he was demolished by Dominic Thiem who was at the peak of his career at the time.
Medvedev could never win a single match at the French Open up until 2021. In 2021 he reached the Quarterfinals and in 2022 reached the 4th round of the championships. His strong fan base is eager to see him do even better this year continuing the momentum he is currently in. He has little time left to train for the season which might work against him. Here’s wishing him Good luck.
