“Years of sacrifice and hard work paid off” Ons Jabeur becomes the first African woman to reach a Grand Slam final in the open era

Ons Jabeur is just one match away from winning her first-ever singles Grand Slam after defeating her close friend Tatjana Maria of Germany in the Wimbledon Championship 2022 semi-finals match in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. She fired 15 winners in the first set without facing any single break point.
Jabeur is the first African woman to reach a maiden Grand Slam singles final in the Open era which will be held on Saturday, 9th of July,2022. She will be up against the winner of the other semifinal which is between 2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep of Romania and Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.

“It is a dream come true from years of hard work and sacrifice. I am very happy that’s paid off and just one more match to go to win the title,” Ons Jabeur said at the post-match interview. She also said that “I am proud Tunisian woman standing here. I know in Tunisia they must be going crazy at the moment. I want to see more Arab and African players on the tour. I myself love the game and want to share this experience with them.”
She also applauded her opponent and close friend, Tatjana Maria. She said “Physically, Tatjana is a beast, she doesn’t give up and she is impressive on the court being a mother of two. She is her barbeque buddy. I hope she’s continues this way. Let’s not play again and I’m good for now.”
