“Proud of myself and my team,” Alejandro Davidovich Fokina celebrates his success as the runner-up at Monte-Carlo Masters
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the runner-up of the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022, is the biggest success story of the tournament. He had the most difficult draw facing the world number 1, Novak Djokovic who was looking for a resurgence. He crushed David Goffin in the pre-quarterfinals and then went on to defeat the Indian Wells 2022 Champion, Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals.
The semifinals was another tight contest with former world number 3, Grigor Dimitrov. Dimitrov was playing well, but Fokina prevailed against Grigor in a marathon contest. Davidovich Fokina reached his first-ever ATP Masters finals and he was face to face with the defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Tsitsipas is an incredibly difficult opponent on all the surfaces, but on clay, he is a beast, a force to be reckoned with. He was the runner-up at the Roland Garros 2021. Djokovic had to put his heart, soul, and all of his strength to take down Stefanos in a 5-set match on the clay court at the French Open.
Incredible journey for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at Monte Carlo
Nobody would have thought that Fokina would get past Djokovic in the round of 32, let alone the debutant would play the finals. After his win over Djokovic, Fokina’s coach was in tears. It seemed as if all their hard work had come to fruition as the Spaniard defeated Novak Djokovic. Davidovich Fokina was unstoppable after that win.
He went on a roll and the debutant had entered the finals at Monte-Carlo. Stefanos Tsitsipas successfully defended his title in Monte-Carlo against Davidovich Fokina but Fokina was satisfied too. The journey was so amazing that he was happy with him entering the semifinals itself.
Although Fokina could not win the title in Monaco, his performance here has been of the highest level and it is indicative of the bright future the young star has. He is incredibly talented and his performance here could serve as a launchpad for his future victories.
