Tim Henman is convinced that Qinwen Zheng will win major titles. The Chinese took the tennis world by surprise in Melbourne when she reached the final of the Australian Open, ending as runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka.
In September, at the US Open, she reached her first major tournament quarterfinals and climbed two steps better than the first-season Grand Slam title.
Although the Chinese professional wasn’t among the favorites to win the Melbourne crown, she showed confidence by defeating the likes of Katie Boulter, Dayana Yastremska, and Anna Kalimskaya en route to the final.
During an interaction with Eurosport, Tim Henman admitted that Qinwen Zheng is just scratching the surface and that she will win many Grand Slams in the future.
I think she is just scratching the surface. She has played incredible tennis, and this is a massive learning curve. I am sure it would have been painful to have been hit off the court (in the final), but I think with her work ethic and mentality and game, there are so many areas she can improve on.Tim Henman said
She can improve her serve. The forehand can be a weapon but can be erratic. The motivation from getting to a final and losing… I am sure she will continue working hard. If she is this good, with all the improvements she can make, I am convinced she will win majors in the future.Continuing further, he added
Zheng’s run at the Australian Open comes ten years after retired Chinese player Li Na lifted the Melbourne crown. For context, Li remains the most successful Chinese player of all time. She won her first Australian title at 29 and the second when she was 32. With that being said, Zheng, who is just 21, is sure to win a Grand Slam.
Qinwen Zheng enters top-10 in WTA ranking for the first time
Qinwen Zheng has earned her first top-10 place in the WTA Live ranking after an excellent performance at the Australian Open.
The Chinese, who reached her first major final in Melbourne, rose from No. 15 in the World ranking to No. 7, soaring past her previous career-high of No. 13.
The 21-year-old became the second Chinese player to ever reach a major tournament final, after Li Na. She is also the second Chinese player to reach the top 10 after Li Na.
Also, Dayana Yastremska, whom Zheng defeated in the semifinal, made her biggest move on the world ranking, moving from 93 to 29, just eight places below her career high. She also became the first qualifier to reach the Australian Open semifinals since Christine Dorey in 1978.
