Rafael Nadal has not wasted much time in bringing in a replacement for Francisco Roig. Nadal parted ways with fellow compatriot Francisco Roig who had been with Nadal for nearly two decades. Roig had joined Nadal’s camp back in 2005 and was an integral part of his team alongside uncle Toni Nadal and helped shaped the career of the former World No. 1.
While Nadal did not specify the reason for the split with Roig, he has not wasted much time in bringing in a new replacement. Nadal announced the end of his association with Roig on the 16th of December and has today announced the addition of a new member to help him next season.
The ‘King of Clay’ has reached out to former Argentine pro Gustavo Marcaccio to join his team. Marcaccio has been a coach at the Rafa Nadal Academy since April 2021. Nadal made his decision public through an Instagram post adding a photo of his entire coaching team and welcoming the Argentine to his setup.
“Hello everyone. I want to inform you of the joining of Gustavo Marcaccio (??) to the technical team. Gustavo has been working at the @rafanadalacademy since April 2021 and I understand he is a good addition to the team. It sure will help us a lot to stay on the way. Welcome Gustavo!” wrote Nadal in the post’s caption alongside photos of coaches Marc Lopez and Carlos Moya.
Who is Gustavo Marcaccio, the new coach hired by Rafael Nadal
While many players look for established coaches, Nadal has surprised everyone by bringing on Marcaccio to his team. One can only assume Nadal would have noticed the Argentine’s tactical analysis at his Academy because of which he has brought him to his team.
Born on 3 May 1977 in Buenos Aires, Marcaccio was active majorly during the late 90s and the early 2000s. Unfortunately, he could never make it past the qualifying rounds at any Grand Slam and had a career-high ranking of World No. 284 achieved in 2004.
The only success for Marcaccio came in the ITF Futures where he won 5 titles from 6 finals. He had a slightly better record in the doubles. Unlike the singles events in Challenger events, Marcaccio managed to reach 3 finals on the Challenger circuit but lost them all. He however won 13 doubles titles from 19 finals in Futures events.
