Nominees for the Laureus World Sports Awards 2023 have been announced, and it is no surprise to see a few players from tennis. Laureus is known for its prestigious sports awards that hold a very high value. It is a yearly event that recognizes outstanding individuals and teams in sports and their remarkable accomplishments over a year.
Founded in 1999 by the founding patrons of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Daimler and Richemont, the award ceremony celebrates the best of the best in sports. On May 25, 2000, the inaugural ceremony of the Laureus World Sports Awards was held in Monte Carlo, with a keynote speech by South African president Nelson Mandela. Since then, the awards have been presented annually in eight categories, as of 2020.
Rafael Nadal is nominated in the category of the 2023 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. Even though he had an average second half of the year, it didn’t hold him back from getting a nomination. He was exceptional in the first half of 2022, winning two Grand Slam titles. He is the only tennis player to be nominated in this category this year.
On the other hand, in the women’s category, Iga Swiatek is nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year Award. Just like Rafa, she won two Grand Slam titles last year and reached world No. 1 in the WTA rankings.
Apart from these, two other young talents grabbed the world’s attention last year in tennis and were also nominated. Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina are nominated for the 2023 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award.

Little more about Laureus World Sports Awards 2023
In the men’s category, there are few good players from various sports that made a mark. Along with Rafael Nadal, there are players like Max Verstappen, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Stephen Curry, etc. Even in the other two categories, there are certain players with the remarkable performance overall in 2022.
However, fans believe that Carlos is most likely to win the award in his category for his exceptional performance. He not only won his first Grand Slam title but also the youngest one to reach world No.1 in the ATP men’s rankings. He also won ATP titles last year which earned him this nomination. Overall all the players nominated from different sports for different categories deserve to be nominated and it will be interesting to see the winners.
