Rafael Nadal's injury at 2022 Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal has had an eventful season this year. The Spaniard started the year ranked as 6th in the world but has made his way into the Top-2 with a shot at the year-end No. 1 ranking as well. Nadal also picked up two Grand Slam titles at the Australian and the French Open along with three Tour titles as well.

Nadal was inching closer to his third major of the season at the 2022 Wimbledon but failed to do so. An untimely abdominal tear during his quarter-final match forced him to withdraw on the eve of his semi-final clash with Nick Kyrgios. The tear also hindered his preparation for the US Open as he could play only 1 tournament before heading to New York where he lost in the 4th round.

“I had two breaks in the abdominal at Wimbledon and the week before the US Open. I had to return to make a serve that was not mine and in the end there are too many things to compete With guarantees. It is what it is and you have to live with what you have. It is important for me to play tournaments in a row like the one I had until Indian Wells.

“Hopefully next year I can start with a little continuity and that is why I have signed up to play the first week of the year to spend more days on the circuit competing and training,” said Nadal as reported by Marca.

Injuries and Nadal are an age-old story. While his chronic foot injury has been troubling him for years now, the Spaniard has had bouts with various other issues as well. Nadal also spoke about his issues at the 2022 Paris Masters but maintained that he is still looking at the positives.

“In Paris I hadn’t competed for a long time and I had a little I had a stomach problem. I was vomiting, at the end of the third set I felt terrible in my stomach. I didn’t say anything at that moment because it didn’t work. I had a bad day and then I was able to train normally again.

“This year I had some exciting moments winning the Australian Open and Roland-Garros. It was a very good year, but difficult at the same time, because I had physical issues. But, if I put it all in context, it was an unforgettable year,” added the Spaniard.

Following Carlos Alcaraz‘s injury in Paris, the youngster has withdrawn from the year-end championships making Nadal the top seed at the event. Nadal will make his 17th appearance this year at the event but is still on the lookout for his first title there.
