Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal returned to action at the Brisbane International after a long break of almost a year. However, his comeback was cut short due to injury and the 37-year-old had to withdraw from the 2024 Australian Open.
Later, it was revealed that Nadal will return to action with the ATP 250 tournament in Doha. Now, Nadal’s coach, Carlos Moya has shared an update about the Spaniard’s readiness.
Moya has claimed that Nadal is ready to go now. The Spaniard’s coach says that the 22-time Grand Slam champion looks like a bull who was locked up for a year and has now been released. Moya claims that Nadal will play like a beast now and will be the favorite to win any tournament he plays.
Rafa reminded me of a bull that has been locked up for a year, you release it and it goes like a beast. He will be a candidate to win the tournaments he playsCarlso Moya said.
Carlos Moya reveals Rafael Nadal’s schedule after comeback
Carlos Moya also talked about how Rafael Nadal’s schedule will look once he makes a comeback. Moya has said that while Nadal will make a comeback at the ATP 250 tournament in Doha, he will not play the clay-court tournaments in South America. Instead, the Spaniard will head to the United States and will continue playing on hard court.
Nadal’s coach also explained the rationale behind such a plan. Moya said that while they are aware of the benefits of playing on clay courts, the switch from hard court to clay court and then again to hard court will be a tough ask for Nadal.
Surface changes are not easy. While it is true that the clay should be better for the joints, to go from hard court to the clay, to go back to the United States, and then again to the clay, we thought it was a little excessive. That's why we chose this calendar, without so much change of surface.Rafael Nadal’s coach explained.
As per Nadal’s coach, the 37-year-old might play at the Qatar Open and might also compete at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Nadal then may take a rest and return to action with the Indian Wells. The 22-time Grand Slam champion might also feature at the Miami Open.
However, there is no clarity about when Nadal will make the switch from hard to clay. But as the Spaniard is certain to play at his home slam, Nadal might play the three ATP Masters- Monte-Carlos Masters, Madrid Open, and the Italy Open scheduled before the 2024 French Open.
