Rafael Nadal has been dealing with injury-related issues ever since his career first took off and gained him massive fame in the tennis world. However, the Spaniard has always managed to move past the hurdles and establish a formidable name for himself.
Subsequently, an old video clip of Nadal joking about his injury after suffering a quarterfinal defeat at the hands of Fernando Gonzalez at the 2007 Australian Open recently resurfaced.
The former World No. 1 was tackling injury issues before the onset of the season’s Australian Open campaign, having skipped it in 2006. Rafael Nadal fenced challenges from Robert Kendrick, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Stan Wawrinka, and Andy Murray in the event’s previous rounds before eventually losing to the Chilean in the last eight.
However, the Spaniard took a medical time-out after he faced multiple problems during the match. Later in a post-match interview, the 37-year-old hilariously commented on his injury when he was asked which part of his leg was hurting.
Well, it's not just the one place. I have pain here, in my famous a**(smiling). After I feel a little bit here, too. That maybe it's just tired, no? But down this way and in the a** is very, very painful, no?Said Rafael Nadal during a post-match interview at the 2007 Australian Open.
Ironically, the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion’s 2023 season was hampered after he sustained a reoccurring hip injury during his performance at the year’s Australian Open.
Rafael Nadal was content with his performance despite facing a quarterfinal defeat at the 2007 Australian Open
In the same post-match interview, Rafael Nadal reserved a few words for his performance in the 2007 edition of the Melbourne Slam. Despite his quarterfinal elimination to Fernando Gonzalez, the Spaniard was not disheartened by his defeat.
The former World No. 1 stated that he was content with his performance, and he gave it his all to reach the last eight stages of the hardcourt Slam.
Well, disappointing, no, because I was playing fine. I was playing good. I was winning very important match two days ago against Murray. I was with good confidence for try to play this quarterfinals and try to go to the final, no? But, well, that's it. I was trying my best all the time. I was fighting a lot for being in this quarterfinals.Nadal said.
Nadal lifted his maiden Melbourne slam in 2009 after downing Swiss tennis star Roger Federer in the event’s summit clash. The 37-year-old later claimed victory after 13 years in 2022 after overpowering Daniil Medvedev in a five-setter thriller.
