The tennis world has been rocked again by news of Rafael Nadal withdrawing from the Rome Masters. The Spanish King of Clay has been withdrawing from all the tournaments this year one tournament at a time. He was last seen on the court only in January at the 2023 Australian Open. Nadal, untrue to his nature, crashed out in the second round of the Australian Open.
He had one final medical test to decide whether he would play in Rome before the Roland Garros. But to the horror of his fans, after his physical Rafael Nadal posted on Twitter saying he would be withdrawing from Rome.
Loosely translated Rafael Nadal said, “I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to be in Rome. You all know how much it hurts me to miss another one of the tournaments that have marked my professional and personal career for all the love and support of the Italian tifosi(fans).” Not just the Italian fans, but fans across the globe are also pretty upset.
This announcement means Rafael Nadal will play Roland Garros completely cold as he will have missed all the clay tournaments leading up to the Grand Slam. Going to French Open with no tournament preparation will also diminish his chances of winning his 15th French Open title. Speculations don’t end there, as many many feel he may not even play Roland Garros at this rate.

Fans of Rafael Nadal are shocked by the news. They are sending out messages of support to the player. Some fans are literally depressed by this news and feel this might be the end of the Rafael Nadal era. Many of his followers could only express their sorrow with this news.

A tennis follower thinks of this whole Rafael Nadal comeback unfolding as mythology. He said “I think this mythology is going to come crashing down very dramatically, unfortunately. Nadal is an incredible athlete and a champion unlike any other but he is human and has never been more mortal on the court in his life. Will be a very emotional goodbye to his career.” But a huge section of people still believe that one can not write off Rafael Nadal. They think he might still be able to win Roland Garros in 2023 if he plays.
Some critics of Rafael Nadal felt that this was indication enough to retire. He should have been planning his retirement rather than dragging his comeback one tournament at a time. They believe Rafael Nadal has unfairly kept his fans second-guessing about his comeback.
Still, whether he will be able to play Roland Garros remains dangling. Only time will tell.
