“Ready for the challenge” Nick Kyrgios feels he is one of the most competitive people ahead of his maiden Wimbledon final
Nick Kyrgios
Wimbledon 2022 has been a fairytale for Nick Kyrgios, who just a year ago was contemplating leaving tennis for good. After the ban on Russian and Belarusian players this year, world number 1 Daniil Medvedev, and other top players were left out and the draw further weakened after the withdrawal of 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini, and former Wimbledon runner-up Marin Clic due to CoVID. This left Kyrgios with a much easier way to the semifinal than he would have gotten initially. Combined with the draw opening up and his stellar form on the grass, he cruised into the semifinal.
He was expected to face Rafael Nadal to make his way to the final but due to Rafa’s abdominal tear getting worse as the tournament proceeded, he pulled out. Rafa was in a lot of pain in his epic quarterfinal encounter with Taylor Fritz and was able to eke out the win despite being behind most of the match. This prolonged battle left Rafa in tatters and he decided to withdraw from his semifinal encounter for the sake of his health. This lucky break gave Kyrgios the ticket to his first-ever Grand Slam final, 8 years after his breakthrough at Wimbledon in 2014.

Nick Kyrgios says that he loves to compete.
Kyrgios got the extra rest day to get some more practice as he aims for once in a lifetime opportunity of winning a Wimbledon title. In his press conference before the Wimbledon final for Kyrgios, he talked about his mindset going into the match. He said: “I don’t know if my relationship with tennis changed but I know I love to compete. I’m one of the most competitive people that I know. I love the win/lose part of the sport. I’m ready for the challenge”
It’s going to be tough for the winner of Novak Djokovic/Cameron Norrie to take down an in-form and well-rested Kyrgios but since the Australian knows that he might not get a chance at a Grand Slam title again, he would also be under huge pressure. It’s going to be an interesting final which fans hope will not be smeared by any huge Kyrgios drama, just excellent tennis.
