Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic shocked the tennis world as he fired longtime coach Goran Ivanisevic on Wednesday. The 24-time Grand Slam champion announced that they have decided to part ways but did not reveal the reason behind it. With a long and successful partnership ending abruptly, speculations about the reason behind started.
While Djokovic did not divulge the details in his social media post where he announced the separation, a media report has made the revelations. The report in the Serbian media has revealed that the deteriorating on-court relationship between Djokovic and Ivanisevic resulted in the separation.
The report claimed that as Ivanisevic was failing to advise Djokovic in crunch situations, the Serbian was frustrated about it. This was visible during quite a few matches in the past few months. For example, Djokovic was seen muttering “awful” at his team during the Australian Open semifinal.
Djokovic was also heard saying “Don’t tell me everything is alright because if I’m asking everything cannot be okay” during a United Cup match. The situation only worsened with Ivanisevic failing to meet the demands of modern-day coaching.
However, since that rule (on-court coaching) was introduced, the communication between Djokovic and Ivanisevic worsened from tournament to tournament. When the best tennis player of all time was not doing well, he asked - very often very nervously - for real advice from his box. The Croatian expert, who was not used to such a way of working, because it was not possible during his playing time, was not able to respond to the demands of his pupil.Sport Klub’s Vojin Velickovic wrote.
Novak Djokovic clears the air!
Not just the Serbian media but Novak Djokovic also cleared the air about his separation from Goran Ivanisevic. The 36-year-old revealed the reason while he attended the premiere of the documentary on Nikola Pilic.
Djokovic revealed that while his friendship with the Croatian remains intact, their on-court partnership had to end as it had reached saturation. The Serbian ace said that the pair went through some unpleasant times and hence had to end the collaboration.
Goran is, first of all, a friend for life. Mine and my family's. Someone who is extremely dear to me. Just because we ended our collaboration, it does not mean that we will stop being friends. We reached a point of saturation, we felt that it was time to part ways after almost six years of partnership where we have written the pages of the history of our sport. We have gone through everything and a lot during our time.Novak Djokovic said about his split with Goran Ivanisevic. (H/T: Tennis World)
Notably, Ivanisevic and Djokovic worked together for almost six years wherein the Serbian ace reached the pinnacle of tennis. Djokovic won 12 Grand Slam titles during his partnership with Ivanisevic. He also achieved the year-end No. 1 ranking four times.
However, the Serbian has been facing a crisis this season as Djokovic is yet to win his first title. Although he has played in only two tournaments so far, the 36-year-old has looked out of touch. It is to be seen who replaces Ivanisevic as Djokovic’s coach and what results it brings for the Serbian.
