Andrey Rublev defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the Serbian Open 2022, winning his third title of the season with a final score of 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-0. Djokovic was not in top form, having already missed a number of matches this season owing to the lack of vaccination. It was his third event of the season.

Throughout a short instant at Rublev’s service, the Russian slapped the ball wide to Novak’s left and then wide to the right to force Djokovic to play his peak value to get the ball. However, the speed had taken the ball away, and Novak lost the point the next time his racquet was seen closely missing the ball boy near the net.

In the video, it’s impossible to tell whether Novak threw the racket or it fell out of his grip. As the video progressed, the child returned the racquet to Novak, who said a few things to him that were unclear. As the video gained traction, journalist Ben Rothenberg shared it and accused Novak of tossing his racket.

“The good news for Djokovic is that he has had a lot of time on the pitch this week after depriving himself of it and playing over 10 hours in his four games. The bad news is that like others at ATP he still has a real problem with firing reckless projectiles of anger that hit/almost hit people” tweeted Rothenberg.

Over the years, Rothenberg has frequently tweeted against Djokovic for situations. With a clearly skewed leaning towards the Serb, netizens, particularly Djokovic’s followers, put the journalist in his place and called on him to spread false information about one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Alongside them, World No.17 Reily Opelka also criticised the journalist. The American took it to Twitter to express his dissatisfaction. In his Words, “The good news here, is you lose so much credibility every time you spread misinformation. The bad news is, you dont face any consequences (revoking of media credential) for being incredibly biased and blatantly lying.”
