Former Women’s doubles World No. 1 Rennae Stubbs recently took to Twitter to criticize Italian player Martina Trevisan’s un-sportsmanlike conduct after her match against 19-year-old German Noma Akugue Noha.

After a closely fought match that lasted 3 sets, Akugue Noha was in tears as she hit a final winner to seal the match. The 19-year-old was emphatic as she rushed to the net to shake hands with her opponent. She was, however, met with a cold handshake by Trevisan. Trevisan looked as though she wanted no part in congratulating the young German on a well-played match.

Former player and Eurosport analyst Rennae Stubbs took notice of Trevisan’s behavior and called her out in a tweet. She wrote that her cold behavior at the end of the match was hardly the way to behave.

Stubbs wrote in a scathing tweet, “I’m sorry that was a pathetic “hand shake” if that’s what u call it from Trevisan! Bloody hell, the kid legit beat u and she’s in tears walking to the net and u barely shake her hand. Not approved!!!”

Most fans seemed to agree with Stubbs’ take. They said that Trevisan should rather focus on the great match they played and congratulate her opponent for her level of play.

They also mentioned that such cold handshakes have been a regular feature on the WTA tour. To the extent that a cold handshake is simply given the moniker ‘WTA handshake’ given how often it happens on the women’s tour.

With the win, Akugue Noha moved to the semifinals at the German Open, her best showing at a WTA tournament. She will try to make the best of her good form and try to win a maiden WTA title in Hamburg.
