With just a couple of days remaining for the US Open draw, talks about Novak Djokovic‘s withdrawal are starting to take place at an exponential pace. The Serbian maestro is still on the US Open entry list and if he doesn’t withdraw before the draw, he will be named in the draw as the No.5 seed and will later be replaced by a qualifier/lucky loser if he fails to compete.

Djokovic is currently unvaccinated and according to the US rules, can’t enter the country. He has refused to get vaccinated and hence is dependent on any last-minute rule change. The CDC will take a final call in the coming days and Djokovic is hopeful for any amends in the ruling.

Due to this reason, Djokovic hasn’t yet withdrawn from the tournament and is facing allegations of being selfish. Renowned journalist Ben Rothenberg recently shared his views about the matter and put certain things in perspective. He revealed that because Djokovic isn’t withdrawing, he is taking up a place in the main draw which would’ve been granted to a player from qualifying. Continuing this chain, a lesser-known player would’ve been pushed into qualifying.

World No. 242 Pol Martin Tiffon, who has won just $25,434 in prize money all year, would’ve entered the US Open qualifying with Djokovic had withdrawn in time. As a result, he’d have at least won $21,000 in prize money which would obviously mean a lot to him.

Rothenberg further called Djokovic “selfish” for prioritizing himself and seconded that by saying that he is saying all this because it is practically impossible now for Djokovic to enter the USA.

“If Djokovic wants to take the selfish route and wait as long as possible to the detriment of others, that’s his prerogative. I’m just documenting this because it’s wild to see a star who can’t legally enter the US (because of his own choices) desperately clinging on like this,” he said.
